
Emily Barske

Emily Barske is a journalist who has led newsrooms in the production of a variety of newsletters, newspapers, magazines and events. Her team at the Des Moines Business Record was nationally recognized as a finalist for top newspaper two years running by the Alliance of Area Business Publishers. She also writes about journalism ethics for NPR’s Public Editor team, and is particularly passionate about advancing conversations on coverage of equity and civility. She previously served as editor of the Marshalltown Times-Republican, her hometown newspaper, and was there through coverage of the EF-3 tornado that ravaged the community. In college, she served as the first two-term editor in chief of the Iowa State Daily newsroom, and worked for the Cedar Rapids Gazette and Omaha World-Herald. She serves on the Iowa FOI Council and Iowa Newspaper Association committees. She is also passionate about volunteering for organizations working to empower girls and women, including ACCESS and the Young Women’s Resource Center.
