Editorial Leadership with Sarah Nichols
“As a leader; put yourself in other’s shoes, always finish the latest but start before the rest, use intention in everything you do, build a culture among your staff, and persist through every challenge you and your staff face.” – 2025 Editorial Leadership Class Member
The Editorial Leadership class challenges students to rethink the way they see their student media program and their role within it. Designed for leaders at all experience levels, this course focuses on helping students grow as editors, collaborators, and decision-makers while strengthening the teams they lead.
Throughout the class, students explore strategies to improve both their leadership and the work their staff produces. Sessions focus on communication, motivation, and innovation, while also diving into practical topics like production cycles, management techniques, coverage systems, and workflow efficiencies, all with an emphasis on putting people first.
By studying best practices from professional media outlets and examining real-world examples, students leave with a deeper understanding of the “why” behind strong leadership and the “how” to put it into action. Each participant will also walk away with practical plans they can implement with their staff in the upcoming school year.
